Quando um circuito está funcionando normalmente, seu valor de impedância é pequeno ( queda de pressão mínima ) e, à medida que o excesso de fluxo aumenta SUA temperatura, o valor de impedância aumenta drasticamente em várias ordens de magnitude, reduzindo a corrente do circuito para abaixo do valor de segurança, permitindo que o circuito traseiro seja protegido e retorne automaticamente para um valor de baixa impedância quando o excesso de fluxo desaparecer. O efeito é semelhante ao do conjunto de comutação, exceto que o tempo de resposta é mais lento.
